Playscapes

Immersive creative environments where children can explore, imagine, make and play.

Our playscapes are designed to give children the freedom to explore and create their own experiences. They combine imaginative environments, tactile materials and open-ended play, with Make Play artists helping children discover the possibilities of the space.

What is a playscape?

A playscape is an environment created especially for open-ended play, where children can explore, experiment, imagine and make their own discoveries. We transform an ordinary space into a colourful, tactile world filled with intriguing materials and objects that have no single, designated purpose — a fabric ball might become a planet, a pocket might become a nest, and a bendy stick could become almost anything. Expect blocks made from soft fabrics, rings and hoops, spinny seats, sensory surfaces, fabrics, pockets, balls, sticks and all sorts of unexpected things to touch, move, build with and investigate. Rather than telling children what to do, a playscape gives them the freedom to decide what something might be, how it could be used and where their imagination takes them.

Playscapes available to hire

We currently have two Make Play playscapes available to hire. Both can be brought to your setting with Make Play facilitation, creating a supported experience rather than simply providing equipment.

THE POSSIBILITY PLAYSCAPE

Our ever-evolving playscape for open-ended exploration.

A constantly evolving world of open-ended play, created from an ever-growing collection of colourful, tactile and intriguing materials. Developed through our work with children, families and different communities — including SEND groups — the playscape is never quite the same twice. Dens, hiding places, textures, building materials, sensory experiences and unexpected objects invite children to explore, experiment and create their own worlds.
